The Southern Kitchen and Bar
Location: 2301 Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. Suite 300 Birmingham, AL 35203
Item Ordered: The South-ern’ Special
Taste: OMG. I have been trying to eat at this restaurant for about 4 months now. People have been telling me how good The Southern Kitchen and Bar is and how I should try it. I finally got to try it and…drum roll please…this place is bomb af. First of all, the location is placed in Midtown Birmingham which is the newest area in Birmingham so everything located in Midtown is nice and new. The actual restaurant has a twist between modern and country decor, steel and wood covers the whole restaurant which gives it a nice sleek look. It’s the perfect place to catch happy hour after work, take your significant other on a date, or just kick it by yourself and listen to a live band. I went for brunch and I ordered a vodka drink called “Georgia Peach” and one of their more popular brunch items “The South-ern’ Special”. Everything taste good! The grits had gouda cheese in it which gave it a smokey flavor, the gravy for the biscuits had sausage in it, but it did not overpower the taste of the gravy. The eggs were lightly scrambled. The hash browns were seasoned by Jesus. I am not lying. This is one place that I would recommend everyone should check out.

Eugene’s Hot Chicken – Minority Owned
Location: 2268 9th Ave N, Birmingham, AL 35203
Item Ordered: Jumbo Chicken Wings – Mild w| coleslaw
Taste: I was referred to this restaurant by a friend who knew that I like to support black owned businesses. I was going to try Hattie B’s Hot Chicken and I went to Eugene’s instead. Eugene’s is located in downtown Birmingham right around the corner from Midtown. It is a very small restaurant and they had a food truck outside too which tells me they probably get most of their business through take-out orders. I ordered the jumbo chicken wings in a mild sauce. Which were pretty good. I know they were good because I was eating the wings plain without dipping it in my blue cheese, and I love blue cheese. The coleslaw on the other hand was just okay. It was edible. It did have a homemade taste to it but it didn’t have much flavor. I would suggest they add a little more pepper and paprika with a little bit of sugar. All in all, Eugene’s was good. I love the location, and I would definitely try this place again.

Purple Onion
Location: 1551 Montgomery Hwy, Birmingham, AL 35216
Item Ordered: Loaded Chicken Baked Potato
Taste: Purple Onion is known for their loaded baked potatoes and I never had one! I definitely was missing out! The baked potato was huge, I couldn’t even finish the entire meal. The baked potato was topped with grilled chicken, cheese, chives, sour cream, and bacon bites. The meal came with BBQ sauce to put on top or dip the chicken into. Purple Onion uses shredded cheese on their baked potato so the cheese was a little harden by the time the potato was delivered to me but other than that the meal was perfect. I couldn’t finish the whole potato in one sitting so I had the ate the rest of the potato after I came back from a party. The potato heated up perfectly! It tasted just as fresh heated up as it did when it was delivered to me

Wings Plus 3 – Minority Owned
Location: 437 Green Springs Hwy, Birmingham, AL 35209
Item Ordered: 6-piece wing Combo w| Kee-Kee Poo Juice
Taste: I have been on the search for some down home good in the hood wings in birmingham and I found it! Thank you to all of the people that told me about the Wings Plus chain in the greater birmingham area. When you first walk in, the store is very small and there was a long line to place your wing order so I knew that this place was going to be good. I ordered the honey BBQ wings with cajun fries. The wings were lightly breaded with plenty of sauce. The cajun fries was a nice choice, it was topped with ranch and cajun seasoning. I had never had cajun fries before and I think it’s safe to say that I am hooked. Wings Plus has their own signature juice that they call KeeKee Poo which is 10xs better than red koolaid. I suggest that when you go to Wings Plus please try it!

Metro City Diner
Location: 180 Inverness Plaza, Birmingham, AL 35242
Item Ordered: Biscuits and Gravy, eggs and hash brown w| onions added on top
Taste: First of all, let me say that Metro City Diner looks just like an old fashioned diner on the inside of the restaurant. We had to wait about 20 minutes before we could get seated which told me that a lot of people enjoyed this southern restaurant chain. Mimosas were only $7 so we ordered a round for the table, because brunch was meant for mimosas. When the food came we couldn’t believe how much food came out! The plates were huge, the portion sizes was huge, our appetite could not keep up. I was not expecting the biscuits to be so big and fluffy. The gravy had bits of sausage in it which made the dish even more filling. I asked the server to add grilled onions to my hashbrowns which made them super tasty. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and when I was done it barely looked like I put a dent in it.

Big Bad Breakfast (BBB)
Location: 5361 US-280, Birmingham, AL 35242
Item Ordered: Chicken and Waffles
Taste: The entree was delicious! From the looks of it, the chicken looks burnt but that’s why you can’t judge a book by it’s cover! The chicken was moist, and tender and the waffle was soft and the edges were crispy. They even drizzled honey over the whole entree which was a different touch from the basic chicken and waffle dish. Chicken and waffles are best when the chicken is fried and the bone is intact. This restaurant did an excellent job with making sure this simple southern classic dish was done right.
